Vans x Nintendo

Guys, my package from Vans arrived this week and I cannot wait to rock these kicks all weekend!  I may have already worn them to work this week.  Obviously, I’ve been scouting out the Vans x Nintendo collaboration for a while and I finally pulled the trigger when I spotted these Princess Peach sneakers in person.  Vans stores didn’t have my size, but I tried on another pair in store and ordered them online.  Now that they’re here, let me show you a few of my favorite things from this collection.

Nicole Spends Money: video game pre-order list

I’m thinking I just need to sign over my next paycheck to Nintendo, because my Game Stop pre-order list is out of control.  I recently stopped in to pick my brother up a birthday present (a 3DS XL bundle, because I’m the best sister) and left with a long pre-order list!

Here’s what Nintendo is taking all of my money for:

  • Hyrule Warriors for WiiU – this Legend of Zelda game is available September 26, so it currently requires the least amount of patience… yay!
  • Super Smash Bros. for 3DS – I’ve pre-ordered the 3DS version since it comes out before the WiiU version.  This one’s available in October!
  • Pokémon Alpha Sapphire version – I couldn’t be more excited about Hoenn remakes.  I literally could not be any more excited.  November literally cannot come soon enough.
  • Pokémon Omega Ruby version – obviously I pre-ordered both versions!  Did I mention I can’t wait?
  • Super Smash Bros. for WiiU – I haven’t technically pre-ordered this one yet, but I absolutely know I’ll be getting it.  This one’s not out until December, so I’ve got a ways to go.
  • Mario Kart 8 DLC pack 1 & pack 2 – I’ve already pre-ordered the combo pack of both sets of DLC.  I get one in November and one next May.  Pre-ordering also lets me use eight additional colored Yoshis and 8 additional colored Shy Guys!

Yoshi’s New Island

yoshis_island_7

Yoshi’s New Island was released on March 14th.  I picked up a copy after work that evening, and played for a little while before going out to enjoy my Friday night.  On Tuesday, March 18th, I battled Bowser and beat Yoshi’s New Island!

First of all, let me shamefully admit that I don’t always beat games.  Unless it’s pokémon, I don’t typically have the time or attention span to play through.  I love video games, but I’m a 25-year-old with a full-time job and lots of TV to watch!

Second of all, this game is a joy to play, and truly, rather easy.  If I can do it, surely you can!

Gameplay:
Gameplay is definitely similar to Yoshi’s Island. I  hate the idea of Baby Mario and that first time I heard him cry out in Yoshi’s New Island, I decided to play the game without volume.  Yoshi is the star, though, and Yoshi’s cool.

The new addition is the giant Shy Guys who Yoshi swallows to create giant eggs.  The first time I saw one of the jumbo Shy Guys I was a bit alarmed, but they’re actually pretty harmless and this was a fun part of the game!

Yoshis:
As I mentioned before, I’m a sucker for colored Yoshis!  There are 8 different colored Yoshis in this game: classic green, pink, light blue, yellow, blue, purple, red, and orange.  Yoshi is able to transform into a helicopter, submarine, mine cart, bobsled, jackhammer, and hot air balloon.  These transformations came as kind of mini-games throughout the levels.  I enjoyed hot air balloon, mine cart, and bobsled.  Jackhammer and submarine were harder and I actually can’t remember helicopter… did I ever play it?

There’s also a new Super Yoshi mode, where grabbing a star basically turns Yoshi into Sonic the Hedgehog.  It’s not like Sonic, though, in that when Sonic gets dashing he’s able to fly through any obstacle.  Super Yoshi is harder to maneuver.

Bosses:
A boss battle occurred every 4 levels.  I actually loved them!  They were classic in nature: three hits to defeat while avoiding a barrage of attacks.  The attacks never really escalated so once you found the pattern you were all set.  The final level’s boss is Baby Bowser, who the hardest fight of the game, in my opinion.  After defeating him, you play the final boss: Bowser.  The Bowser battle was actually really easy and super fun.

Have you beat the game yet?

Yoshi!

250px-Yoshinewislandboxart3dsIn just two short days, on March 14, Yoshi’s New Island for Nintendo 3DS comes out!  I’m definitely planning on picking up a copy.  I love Yoshi.  This adorable dragon totally appeals to my girly side that loves cute things.  Before I get a chance to play Yoshi’s New Island, I wanted to talk about my favorite Yoshi game: Yoshi’s Story!

It’s not secret that Nintendo 64 is my favorite of game consoles, and I first played Yoshi’s Story rented from Blockbuster.  Remember when that was a thing?  I (or, I guess, my mom?) actually rented this multiple times until I finally bought a copy.  Back then, I didn’t have much independent purchasing power.  I loved the colored-in drawing style, and the all the colored Yoshis!  The multi-colored Yoshis were a real selling point for me.  Pallet swaps can be so much fun.  My favorite was the light blue!  Most of all, I loved this little Yoshi song.

I listened to this thing over and over again.  This is probably not normal, but I have never claimed to be.

Are you planning on playing Yoshi’s New Island?

I can’t wait for a new adventure with Yoshi!  I’m excited to see all the things Yoshi can turn into, and to see the new island itself!
