2015 Reading List

Winter is officially over, and it’s finally starting to feel like it!  (Yes, even here in Boston.)  With March, and therefore a quarter of 2015, coming to a close, I thought I should share what I’ve read thus far.  It’s a short list… just wait ’til summer!

Anyway, onward!

7 Shiny Pokémon

Or, why the adventure of Pokémon is better with friends.

Or, why the adventure of Pokémon is better with friends.

In the last week, I’ve gotten 7 new shiny Pokémon.  I attribute this to the new, more social way I play.

I’ve always played Pokémon alone.  Sure, when it was a big craze in generation 1 and everyone was playing, I played with other kids.  I played with my brother in generation 3 and with my then boyfriend in generation 4.  I’ve always had enough versions and devices to facilitate my own trades or get through the game the way I wanted to.

It’s only recently, with Pokémon ORAS, that I’ve gotten into the finer aspects of the game.  It’s not about beating the elite 4 for me now; it’s about filling with 700+ page National Dex and collecting the pokémon I want.

I was able to do the legendary hunt on my own, but once I was introduced to the online play, I felt instantly more integrated in the Pokémon community.  I got shiny Chespin and shiny Mudkip through Wonder Trade– what luck!

I also realized that I do have a way of joining the community: Twitter!  I was able to obtain a shiny Feraligatr thanks to @mews_heaven!

It was also through Twitter that I made some poké-pals.  After tweeting about the VGC St. Louis finals, I connected with a player who paid it forward and gifted me four awesome shiny pokémon: Charmander, Jirachi, Turtwig, and Fennekin!

Perhaps the best development is that my friend has started playing Omega Ruby after not playing since Red.  It’s been so fun to teach him about all of the new things generations 2 – 6 brought.  Best of all, it’s wonderful to have someone to trade and trade-back with just a text away!  With his help, filling my pokédex should be a lot simpler!

So the moral of the story is, it really is better to play together.

I’d love to be your friend and play Pokémon with you!  My friend code is 4639 9658 6765.  Leave me a comment with yours!

Hope you all have wonderful weekends!

Pokémon: The Adventure Continues

At this point, I’ve put 100 hours into my Alpha Sapphire file, and I have no intention of stopping.  Of course, I’ve captured the last of my legendaries: Zekrom, Reshiram, and Kyurem.  (For the full count, refer to this post.)  Beyond that, I finally feel like I’m playing this game at a new level.

I admit, up until this point I’d played through these games like I played through Red and Blue.  You train; you beat the elite four.  Post-game really became a factor to me in generation III, and it took these games again (or remakes there of) to get me to delve into the finer features, like trading online and breeding.

Just like I’d made it my mission to get every Eeveelution, I made it my mission to get every starter pokémon from all generations.  Through GTS, I’ve accomplished that and will be fully evolving them and breeding more!  I’m also working hard on Masuda Method-ing myself a shiny Charmander to evolve into a shiny Charizard!  If anyone has a shiny Charmander for me, I’ve got a Ho-oh, Latios, and Latias for trade…

But speaking of fully evolved starter pokémon, the Unova distribution is going on now!

Through Mystery Gift, you can get Serperior with the code POKEMON497 and Emboar with the code POKEMON500.  Samurott will be available starting Feburary 5 with the code POKEMON503.  They will all be available until November 30th!  You have some time, but don’t miss out!

If you want to play Pokémon (or other games!) with me, my Nintendo 3DS friend code is 4639 9658 6765.  Leave me a comment to link up, trade, or just chat about pokémon!

ORAS: Post-Game Strong

Gen III/Hoenn games were always my favorite because of the engaging post game. Rarely do I feel the need to keep playing past beating the elite four, but in Hoenn, this all changed. Last time I told you about my Alpha Sapphire post-game, I had caught Latias, Kyogre, Rayquaza, Deoxys, Mesprit, Lugia, Cresslia, Azelf, and Heatran. Now, I have many more accomplishments to tell you about!

Pokémon Bank

I decided to subscribe to Pokémon Bank and transfer over my Xerneas, Keldeo, Diancie, shiny Gengar, and a couple of other pokémon I knew I’d want to keep like Charizard, Blaziken, and Delphox. (X was fire heavy for me.)

Admittedly, I never beat Black. I didn’t like Unova. It’s a project for me to get that done so I can trade forward some of my other legendaries. Hopefully, I get there.

Wonder Trade

Over Christmas, my 12-year-old cousin showed me a bunch of the online features of this game. Since I’ve played since Red and Blue when there were no online capabilities, I kind of had no idea about all this stuff! She brought me into the modern age and traded me a Phione she had bred from her Manaphy.

My favorite thing she showed me was Wonder Trade, and over my little vacation I did a lot of wonder trading! The coolest thing I got in a wonder trade would be a Mesprit, which I put into the GTS to get a Ho-oh from Italy! You know, for unlocking more legendaries.

Favorites

Through GTS, I was also able to fish out a couple of other favorite pokémon I wanted. I grabbed a Piplup and a Drifloon for pokémon that were just sitting in my PC boxes!

I also made it my mission to collect all the eeveelutions. First, I worked up quite the collection of Eevee thanks to DexNav. I still have a couple unevolved Eevee handing out, of which I’ll definitely keep one as Eevee. Then, it was on to evolution! This is the first time I had ever gotten a Sylveon and it was the first eeveelution I was after. Umbreon came next, since it was night when I was playing. I then had to quest for evolutionary stones— finally, when I had a water stone, fire stone, and thunder stone I got myself Vaporeon, Flareon, and Jolteon. A quick detour to Petalburg Woods gave me Leafeon. Then I had to sleep on it and wait for the next day to snag Espeon. I had a bit of a fight with Shoal Cave, but once I found low tide, Glaceon completed my collection!

Legendaries

I got the Eon ticket before Christmas and was so happy I almost cried. That let me add Latios to my collection. I went after the other available legendaries, catching Thundurus, Dialga, Terrakion, Cobalion, Verizion, Entei, Suicune, Raikou (thanks to my Ho-oh from Italy!), Regice, Regirock, Registeel, and Regigigas. After that point, it was up to Omega Ruby to help me through.

my legendaries don't even fit into one PC box!

my legendaries don’t even fit into one PC box!

I had already started Omega Ruby and had 5 badges. I quickly played through the last 3 already with Latios in tow and picking up Groudon along the way. Instead of challenging the elite 4, I decided to straight-up legendary hunt. I picked up another Ho-oh— I’m hoping to put my Italian one back into GTS for something else! Then I went straight into the cloud to get Tornadus. Finally, I used Pokémon Bank to pop my lake guardians into Omega Ruby as a short cut to Palkia. Those three went back to Alpha Sapphire along with Groudon, Tornadus, Palkia. That allowed me to catch  Landorus and Giratina! Once Blaziken gets to level 100, I will take on the last available legendaries of the game: Reshiram, Zekrom, and Kyurem.

So, as you can tell, I’ve been busy!

How’s your ORAS post-game going?

2014 Favorites

It’s that time!  With the year winding down, here is my very own Obligatory 2014 TV Favorites List.  Now, if you’ve been reading for a while, none of these should surprise you.  I thought it might be a fun thing to do year to year, so even though you’ve probably read a million of these, I’m giving you another.  I’ve got two categories for you; my favorite things, TV & video games.  Without further ado:

TV Shows

5. Orange is the New Black | Probably my most anticipated new season of the year, OITNB’s second season did not disappoint!

Orange_is_the_new_Black

LostGirlTVSeriesLogo4. Lost Girl | I stated watching this late last year, early 2014.  This show hit every note for me, and I recommend it for Buffy fans and similar.  It’s final season is just beginning, so jump on this train.

Ecran_Titre_d'American_Horror_Story3. American Horror Story | Coven straddled 2013 and 2014, and Freak Show will bleed into next year.  I’m just so onboard with this show and especially Jessica Lange.  I only hope she is as onboard as I am for the next season!

The_Walking_Dead_title_card2. The Walking Dead | I watched the first season years ago, and picked up again recently just in time for the mid-season finale.  I am constantly impressed with the emotional depths this show brings me to.

1. Orphan Black | Recommended to me in late 2013, I watched the first season of this show just in time for the second to begin.  You may have caught my Clone Club Catch-Ups, and expect to see more next year.  Tatiana Maslany’s masterful performance as almost all of the show’s main characters is always worth watching.

Orphan_Black_logo

Honorable Mention: Top Chef | Another show whose seasons straddle two years, I absolutely loved New Orleans and Boston might be my favorite season ever.  Stay tuned for more recaps!

Video Games

03. Super Smash Bros. WiiU/3DS | Okay, this is two games.  I’ve played the 3DS version more because it’s portable, and I’ve had it longer.  This is my favorite installment of Super Smash since the original N64 version.  The novelty of this concept has not worn off!  Kirby smashing up Pikachu is still awesome.

02. Mario Kart 8 | I hate to say this, but I’m not really a Mario Kart girl.  Sure, I loved Super Mario Kart, but the N64 days had me with Diddy Kong Racing and don’t even get me started on Double Dash.  MK8, however, single-handedly justified purchasing a WiiU for me.  I am so impressed with this game.  I love the online component, and find the DLC exciting.  I keep on coming back for more!

01. Pokémon Alpha Sapphire & Omega Ruby | Hoenn was always my favorite region so I was more excited than ever before for these amazing remakes.  I got through Alpha Sapphire fast; faster than X by far.  These games have even reignited my desire to complete an Unova adventure.  I’m so happy that more people will be introduced to this region and this story.  These games are fantastic and I can’t wait for what Pokémon has in store for us next!  I’d write more about how much I’m obsessed with these fantastic games, but I want to go wonder trade.

And there you have it!  What are your favorite shows and/or games from this year?

Pokéblogging: Cresselia

600px-488Cresselia

As you all know, there’s a whole slew of legendary pokémon to be caught in ORAS.  You can find out how to catch ’em all here.  Curiously, there doesn’t seem to be an explanation on how to catch Cresselia, and the author herself hasn’t even been able to locate the lunar pokémon.

This trainer, however, caught Cresselia last week!  I thought I’d walk you through my legendary hunting thus far so we can maybe better figure out how its done!

380MSLatias: I’m playing Alpha Sapphire, so Latias was literally handed to me.  This is the first legendary you come across in gameplay and I didn’t know it was just going to be given to me.  I almost ditched Steven to stock up on Ultra Balls before the encounter.

382MSKyogre: The version mascot is the first legendary you have to catch.  I stocked way up on Ultra Balls before facing Kyogre and his cutscene primal reversion.  As soon as I came face to face with him, I knew I didn’t have the patience of my youth to lob 100 Ultra Balls at a legendary.  I quit/reset twice out of sheer boredom, but managed to snag Kyogre on my 7th Ultra Ball.

384MSRayquaza: After you finish the main game (that is, beating the elite 4 and champion) you launch into the Delta Episode.  The Delta Episode culminates in the capture of not one, but two legendary pokémon.  Rayquaza comes first and my legendary-catching formula from my Kyogre battle did the trick.  I use my Pikachu (technically, cosplay Pikachu but without costume) to paralyze my target with Thunder Wave and to whittle down HP.  3 Ultra Balls in, Rayquaza was mine!  Easy!

386MSDeoxys: This is the first time I’ve had the opportunity to catch a Deoxys, an article I read said to save your Master Ball for him.  I did.

481MSMesprit:  I wasn’t looking for for a legendary when I was flying around Hoenn on Latias care of the Eon Flute.  I saw a weird red star above a location, Nameless Cavern.  I landed, went inside said cavern and saw a floating ring with a sort of purple dimension inside.  Looking in there let me catch Mesprit.  I have been back 12 hours later and haven’t encountered any of the other lake guardians of Sinnoh.  Of course, I did come across Crescent Island instead…

249MSLugia: I followed the instructions on the linked article to get Alpha Sapphire’s legendary bird.  I caught Lugia the day following Mesprit’s capture, having traded the Scanner for the Tidal Bell the night of Mesprit’s capture, then going to bed because of an early morning/long day obligation.

488MSCresselia: I resumed my legendary search post-Lugia.  Eon Flute flying on Latias, I was headed for the Nameless Cavern to catch another lake guardian.  Instead, I saw Crescent Island under another red star.  I knew what that meant.  Cresselia, another pokémon I had never caught previously, was a more challenging catch.  Initially, I went through over 60 Ultra Balls before restarting the battle and catching Cresselia with fewer than 20 thrown.

482MSAzelf: I was still mad at the Nameless Cavern, so returned with Mesprit in my party a few hours after catching Cresselia.  Sure enough, clear air surrounded the area making me feel strong.  It took a bunch of Ultra Balls and one frustrated restart, but I got him!

485MSHeatran: This guy was easy to find, so I headed over to the Scorched Slab while I was waiting for the Nameless Cavern’s portal to reset.

Uxie will definitely be next!

Now, can we talk about the elephant in the room?  With all of these gold ringed purple portals floating around, why are we not talking more about Hoopa?!

What legendaries have you caught in ORAS?  Let me know!

Mega Rayquaza

We knew it was coming, but it’s so nice that it’s confirmed.  Make room for Mega Rayquaza in Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire!

I talked about the possibilities of Rayquaza in the Hoenn remakes in my last pokémon post, but now I’ve got some answers.  Here’s what we can expect from this Legendary Mega Evolution:

  • Delta Stream, an ability that invokes a Strong Wind weather condition.  This makes flying types receive only normal damage on moves they would typically be weak too and negates all other weather conditions.
  • Dragon Ascent, a hard-hitting flying type move with a super cool name.

I cannot wait to add Rayquaza to my Alpha Sapphire team!

Which new evolution are you most excited for?

PokéNews!

I still cannot contain my Alpha Sapphire/Omega Ruby excitement.  If you are anything like me, you’ll want to mark your calendars for these important dates!

October 13 – October 26 you can pick up a special code card at Gamestop stores.  That gets you a Shiny Gengar holding a Gengarite Mega Stone for your Pokémon X and/or Y games.

October 27 – November 16 you can go on back to Gamestop for a code for Mythical Pokémon Diancie!  Trade this guy into your new Alpha Sapphire and/or Omega Ruby versions and obtain the Mega Stone for Mega Diancie in battles!

There are also a slew of new Pokémon TCG cards coming out.  My collection was my pre-teen pride and joy, and lately I’ve been adding to it again here and there.  I see many a money-flying-away-emoji in my future.

More great news came in the form of this Youtube release:

We’re finally seeing the Primal forms of Groudon and Kyogre in action, and gosh did I find this video enlightening.  A couple of take-aways:

  • Groudon’s ability conjures a new weather condition called Extremely Harsh Sunlight.  While that name sounds a bit silly, the weather condition makes water attacks evaporate in thin air… um, yikes.
  • The video also shows Groudon’s attack, Precipice Blades, which looks fierce.  My main man in Hoenn, Blaziken, doesn’t seem phased, though!
  • Kyogre’s ability conjures a new weather condition called Heavy Rain.  It sounds significantly less ridiculous, and a bit less severe, but its effects are not.  Blaziken uses Flamethrower to no avail… a world without fire attacks is my worst nightmare.  This is going to make things interesting…
  • We also get to see Rayquaza, the third legendary of the Hoenn trio, and I couldn’t be more pleased to see him!  He might be my favorite legendary of all time.
  • Finally, three new Mega Evolved forms are shown: Mega Camerupt, Mega Sharpedo, and Mega Gallade!

I literally can’t handle it.  What do you think about these two new weather conditions?  Do you think Rayquaza could possibly hide a third?

Nicole Spends Money: video game pre-order list

I’m thinking I just need to sign over my next paycheck to Nintendo, because my Game Stop pre-order list is out of control.  I recently stopped in to pick my brother up a birthday present (a 3DS XL bundle, because I’m the best sister) and left with a long pre-order list!

Here’s what Nintendo is taking all of my money for:

  • Hyrule Warriors for WiiU – this Legend of Zelda game is available September 26, so it currently requires the least amount of patience… yay!
  • Super Smash Bros. for 3DS – I’ve pre-ordered the 3DS version since it comes out before the WiiU version.  This one’s available in October!
  • Pokémon Alpha Sapphire version – I couldn’t be more excited about Hoenn remakes.  I literally could not be any more excited.  November literally cannot come soon enough.
  • Pokémon Omega Ruby version – obviously I pre-ordered both versions!  Did I mention I can’t wait?
  • Super Smash Bros. for WiiU – I haven’t technically pre-ordered this one yet, but I absolutely know I’ll be getting it.  This one’s not out until December, so I’ve got a ways to go.
  • Mario Kart 8 DLC pack 1 & pack 2 – I’ve already pre-ordered the combo pack of both sets of DLC.  I get one in November and one next May.  Pre-ordering also lets me use eight additional colored Yoshis and 8 additional colored Shy Guys!
