What I Watch – à La Carte

IMG_5449

I’ve recently cut ties with my cable provider.  We switched to a cheaper, faster internet provider and are exploring the world of à la carte TV!  It’s forced me to really take inventory of what channels I watch.  Here’s my list:

BBC America

It’s at the forefront of my mind that Orphan Black’s final season is coming!  I know I can’t live without seeing this show.  Also, is Broadchurch’s new season going to come to America?  I need that too.  Thankfully, BBC America was offered by both Sling Orange ($20/month) and Playstation Vue ($30/month), our two top options.

Bravo

Watching Top Chef live is of utmost importance to me.  There’s not a show out there that I like recapping more than Top Chef!  I feel like it’s imperative that I have access to this show and this channel… for important reality TV reasons…  We’d have had to bump up to Sling Blue ($5 more per month) to get Bravo, but it’s included in Playstation Vue!

Cartoon Network

We are the Crystal Gems!  Steven Universe is my favorite thing currently on TV.  I bought seasons on Amazon just to stay current.  It’s no surprise that we started our Playstation Vue 7-day free trial the day the new episode premiered.  Cartoon Network is also available on Sling Orange.

HBO

Since Girls is over, we are currently living without HBO.  When Game of Thrones comes back, we will not be living without HBO.  Thankfully, HBO Now is a thing so we can probably just do that independently of any package we have.

MTV

This one I had to sacrifice.  I may have a Catfish addiction and I might enjoy a guilty pleasure or two on this channel (ahem Teen Mom OG), but MTV was not available on Playstation Vue.  We could add MTV for an additional $5 to any Sling package, but…

TLC

Ugh, I can’t help it.  I watch so much TLC it’s pathetic.  I love Say Yes to the Dress which is thankfully always on.  I guess this whole channel is my guilty pleasure.  At the end of the day, I couldn’t live without this channel and it was only available on Playstation Vue, not in any Sling package.

So we’re testing out Playstation Vue!  It’s more expensive than the Sling options, but I wasn’t willing to compromise on TLC.  The best part is, we can cancel at any time if we decide to test something else out!  I guess the actual best part is that there’s a Roku app– we can stream it on both the PS4 in the living room and the Roku in the bedroom, so for the first time ever, we have cable in both rooms!

Who else has made the switch to à la carte TV?

What to Watch in March

If you’ve got a hole in your heart the size of Parks and Recreation and you need a new show to fill it, never fear!  March is upon us with some great TV options.

Maybe, like me, you’re still making your way through House of Cards season 3 which premiered on Netflix late last week, February 27th.  This was one of those rare weekends on which I actually had a life, so I didn’t get to binge much.

More exciting to me is tonight’s US premiere, season 2 of Broadchurch on BBC America.  Tennant on my TV, always.  If you haven’t fallen in love with this show yet, you can binge the 8 episode first season series (sorry, I forgot we’re dealing with British terminology!) on Netflix.  This is one of the shows I’m most excited for this year.  I’ve never watching week by week before, seeing as I missed it’s first series BBC America run.  I watched Gracepoint, the US version also starring David Tennant, that way, but Broadchurch is infinitely better.  I can’t wait!!

On a blog-relevant note: a new season of Hell’s Kitchen started last night!  Since I didn’t blog last season and I can’t seem to live without Gordon Ramsay in my life, you can expect Hell’s Kitchen posts starting tomorrow!

And finally, on the Netflix front, we have two new shows that I’m interested in.  The first is thanks to my idol, Tina Fey.  Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’s first season hits Netflix this Friday, March 6th!  I have been eager for this one since I first heard it existed and you can bet it’ll be my weekend binge.  Then there’s Bloodline, which we’ll have to wait until March 20th for its release on Netflix.  I admittedly don’t know much about this thriller-drama, but I do know that I miss Kyle Chandler from my Friday Night Lights binge.  I’ll be watching this one later in the month as well.

If you don’t think March has enough in store for you, remember that April is that much closer now.  April means Orphan Black, my most-anticipated return of 2015, and Game of Thrones, which is likely everyone else’s!

What shows are you most looking forward to?

Looking Forward: 2015 TV

This is the most important list I could write.  Now that we’ve talked about favorite shows of 2014, let’s look forward to my most anticipated shows of 2015.  Mark your calendars for these very important premiere dates!

I thought Gillian would be nice eye candy to accompany this list.

I thought Gillian would be nice eye candy to accompany this list.

MasterChef Junior | We don’t have to go too long without this delight!  A new season returns Tuesday, January 6th at 8 PM on Fox.  You’ll probably see my recaps pop up on Fridays again.

Shameless | After quite the surprise in the end of last season, I can’t wait for new episodes!  Shameless returns to Showtime Sunday, January 11th at 9 PM.  I’ll be watching on Showtime Anytime since this conflicts with another show…

Girls | I feel like it’s been such a long time since the season finale.  Is Hannah going to Iowa?  I guess we’ll find out on Sunday, January 11th at 9 PM.  My recaps should be ready for you Mondays, as usual.

The Fall | Oh goodness, how I’ve missed this delicious Gillian Anderson detective thriller.  I’ve been waiting forever for new episodes, and the second series finally hits Netflix on Friday, January 16th.

Best New Restaurant | Tom Colicchio hosts this Gordon Ramsay production, Bravo’s new Best New Restaurant.  With the two of them involved, it’s a sure thing I’ll be watching.  The premiere is Wednesday, January 21st at 10 PM, I guess taking the place of Top Chef.  I’m hungry just thinking about it.

The Walking Dead | I’m going to be very busy on Sundays.  The Walking Dead returns from it’s midseason hiatus on Sunday, February 8th at 9 PM on AMC.

Better Call Saul | I finally finished Breaking Bad, checking it off from my TV to-do list.  Saul has got to be my favorite character, and I’m looking forward to more Bob Odenkirk in the AMC show!  It’s set to premiere Monday, February 9th at 10 PM.

Broadchurch | I’d been watching Gracepoint, but when Broadchurch finally hit Netflix it was clear that this is the superior show.  While series 2 premieres in January in the UK, we’ll have to wait a bit longer on BBC America.  Broadchurch series 2 premieres Wednesday, March 4th at 10 PM.

Orphan Black | It’s straight-up torture to make us wait this long!  My favorite show of the year finally returns to BBC America on Saturday, April 18th.  Clone Club Catch-Up will be back, friends!

So now you know what I’m most looking forward to in the new year and how you can watch too!  What shows are you most looking forward to?
