Girls: American B***h

img_2573

I typically write a Girls post after watching the episode on Sunday night.  Even though we got to watch last night’s Girls a bit early, I couldn’t bring myself to write on American Bitch.  My initial reaction was that I didn’t like the episode.  Of course, I loved Hostage Situation so much I had kind of set myself up to be disappointed anyway.  American Bitch isn’t for us to like, though.

The intro is long– we watch Hannah walk to this expensive New York home, check in with the lobby desk, ride the elevator up, and start conversations with Chuck Palmer all before the Girls title card flashes across the scene.  It gave me a long time to judge Hannah’s outfit– a silk blouse, track pants, and metallic slip-ons, an outfit that gives confusing context to what kind of meeting this could be.  We know from last week’s preview that Chuck Palmer is an author, but we’re left to figure out slowly what brings Hannah to him.

We wrestle, as Hannah does, with Chuck’s motives throughout.  Chuck feels victimized– he is sad and lonely, despite the furnishings his successful career has garnered.  For me, everything about the meeting is uncomfortable.  Why did you come?  Why don’t you leave?  I found myself thinking this throughout, but you have to understand from Hannah’s perspective:

  • this is a writer whose work she loves, respects, and connects with
  • he slings compliment after compliment at her about how smart she is, how good her work is, how funny she is, that’s a great sentence…

It’s such a complicated back-and-forth about power dynamics.  It’s uncomfortable.  When the point of genuine connection is met, and Chuck reveals himself to be just as disgusting as we all feared, he reveals a smug smile that confirms that I hate him.  The look of pride on his face when his daughter plays the flute can’t even redeem him.

Burberry Liquid Lip Velvet

IMG_4307.JPG

I always struggle to find a to-go lip product, but Burberry’s Liquid Lip Velvet is an easy winner for me!  Burberry sent me a couple of products to try, and I’m just loving them!

I got two Liquid Lip Velvet colors to try– Fawn, the lighter color above, a pink-nude; and Bright Plum, a deep magenta.  I also got the matching liner in Deep Plum, which is my preferred way to wear liquid lipstick, but having also tried the Liquid Lip Velvet without the liner, it wears perfectly fine without!

I couldn’t have picked two more perfect colors!  Fawn is so on-trend with the your lips, but better nude look.  I’m always looking for something this neutral than just enhances without being too dramatic.  Deep Plum is the opposite– all at once bright & dark, a total statement lip.  Though this is obviously a great choice for fall, the brightness of this color makes me want to rock it in spring too!

While some matte lip colors dry out, Liquid Lip Velvet stayed dewy on my lips for hours, but not in a sticky lipgloss way.  I’m so impressed with how well the color wore and how comfortable the formulation felt!

The final touch was the Fresh Glow highlighting pen in Nude Radiance.  It was suggested I use this on my cupid’s bow and wow did it really pull together the look!  This highlight is beautiful and subtle enough that people (like me) who don’t want to be shiny don’t have to worry.  It’s absolutely gorgeous on the cupid’s bow!  I might be obsessed.

I’m considering picking up another color to add to my collection; (you can see all of the colors here!) which do you think I should get?

Top Chef: Breakout and Dance

I figured I’d say my finale part 1 recap for right before the grand final tonight!

We’re in Mexico now with Shirley, Sheldon and John.  They find their way to Chivas Stadium, home of Guadalajara’s soccer team and their Quickfire Challenge.  They are joined by the winner of Last Chance Kitchen… Brooke!  I’ve got to say, I’d have been happy with either her or Casey here, but Brooke just feels right.  After being beat by Last Chance Kitchen in the finale, it’s only appropriate that she gets her chance to win again through Last Chance Kitchen.

Since Chavas means goat, they’re cooking goat.  A little morbid maybe?  Also, hard to do in 45 minutes!  Here’s what they makes:

Brooke wins the Quickfire, making her return all that much sweeter.

For the elimination challenge, it’s all about Patron!  They have to make a unique margarita to pair with a dish to serve to 100 Patron employees.  Also, they have sous chefs!  Casey, Sylva, Katsuji, and Emily walk on out.  Brooke gets to assign them since she won.  She takes Casey for herself, gives Sylva to Shirley, Emily to Sheldon, and Katsuji to John.  Yup, that last one’s trouble.

Here’s how they do:

Sheldon was worried about his octopus, and the commercial led us to believe that we should be worried too.  Have no fear, though, Sheldon’s food is great!  The drink gets compared to a fish tank, though– too much garnish.

I was really worried about Shirley.  Sylva accidentally grabbed vanilla instead of agave nectar and, while Shirley thought it was a happy accident, the judges did not agree.

Brooke’s only criticism was that maybe her drink wasn’t that strong, but it made the pairing with her dish that much better.  She ends up taking the win!  Two wins directly after being eliminated, or three wins in a row– she’s on fire!

John’s drink is a big part of his un-doing.  He really wants to create a classic margarita, which is not the creative drink the judges asked for and with just tequila and lime, completely overpowers the food.  He is asked to pack his knives.

Tonight’s finale is actually the match-up I wanted– Shirley, Sheldon, and Brooke will face off for the title.  Who do you think will win?!

Girls: Hostage Situation

I absolutely LOVED last night’s Girls.  It seems the bigger train wreck the situation, the more the episode speaks to me.  What I love about this show is how relatable things are, if not the situations directly but the kind of are we in the right place in our lives? kind of thing.  Like Hannah says in this episode, none of us know anything.

We open with Marnie and Desi having sex and it’s like, what did I expect?  Of course this has already occurred.  Hannah tells Elijah that this has been going on for two weeks even though she was supposed to keep it a secret.  Hannah has been roped into Marnie & Desi’s weekend away in Poughkeepsie as a cover story for poor Ray.

The trip upstate doesn’t go well.  Hannah meets a beautiful shopkeeper who has a story about how leaving New York City saved her life– she’s happier living her truth.  Because she’s slightly psychic, she gives Hannah the tea set from the window, which you know is not going to make it home intact.

Desi and Marnie fight on and off until Marnie discovers Desi’s oxycontin stash.  He admits he’s been addicted to it for a year; Marnie is shocked, but no one watching the episode is.  She smashes the jar, crushes the pills, and locks Desi out of the house.  He rages outside, tries to get in, breaks a window and Hannah’s tea set gets smashed.

Hannah is surprisingly supportive of Marnie.  She tells her it’s hard to see things in other people when she’s only thinking of herself, which she too would know.  She also tells her that Desi looks like “someone in the Pacific Northwest knit a man.”

Meanwhile, Shoshanna has roped Elijah into coming to a women’s networking event with her.  It’s hosted by her former best friends whose start-up coming is thriving.  Jessa follows her here.  Shoshanna blames Jessa’s influence for ruining these friendships– she bailed on the trip to Aruba where the conceived this company because of Jessa.  After being rejected in her attempt to reconnect with them, she let’s Jessa have it.  Elijah lays into Jessa for Adam.  Jessa claims Marnie being with Ray is the same thing.  Elijah launches the secret that Marnie is actually with Desi at the moment out in the open.  Shoshanna tells Jessa to get out of her face.  Jessa ironically tells her to grow up.

TV Lately: 2017 Edition

Happy Friday, friends!  It has been a long time since I did an update on what I’m watching.  It had honestly been a long time since I had something to watch!  With a Top Chef season coming to a close and the Girls final season just starting, I’m back to enjoying TV.  I’m watching a few other things aside from the aforementioned that I’m dying to talk to you about!

Steven Universe

This has already become one of my favorite shows ever.  If you watch my vlogs, you know I started watching one Sunday evening and was completely obsessed by the start of the next weekend vlog.  My love for this show far surpasses anything I’ve watched since Buffy.  It’s the characters, the humor, the music!  This show is really something special.  It reminds me so much of Sailor Moon.  You guys will be hearing me talk about this one a lot more!

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend

When visiting my friend in Philadelphia, I got hooked on this show at her insistence.  She didn’t realize that the music for this show was done by someone in my favorite band, but she did know I’d completely love this show.  It’s a musical comedy and the main character is cringe-worthy and, as the title indicates, crazy.  How often do you hear of shows that are musicals?  It’s uncommon, but it works so well.  I’m so glad I got introduced to this one!

MasterChef Junior

A new season has started and I haven’t actually started watching yet!  I plan to start tonight, actually, seeing as last week’s is up on Hulu* and this week’s on my DVR.  I always love this show and have loved having it on the blog in the past.  With upcoming travel, I knew I wouldn’t be able to keep up with the recaps so I’m sadly sitting this season out.  I don’t want to miss watching these cookin’ kids, though!

* Speaking of Hulu, do you want two weeks for free?  Sign up here to get just that!
