Oops, someone forgot to cancel Blue Apron. That made last week Blue Apron Bonus Week, and you know what? It was just as exciting as our first week!
Though we didn’t pick any of the meals, I imagine I would’ve picked at least two of these and I thoroughly enjoyed all three!
Spicy Ponzu-Glazed Catfish: This gives the pork a run for it’s money on my favorite Blue Apron meal. Accompanying the catfish was zucchini, garlic rice, and ginger peanuts. Though I initially felt I could do without the peanuts, I really loved the textural element they added. I also loved the rice, even though I tasted garlic all night, and would completely make it again.
Chicken & Buttermilk Biscuit
Sandwiches: Okay so, we nixed the sandwich idea, thinking the thick chicken and the unevenly fluffed biscuit were not a marriage made in heaven. My compliments to the chef (Matthew) on making perfectly cooked, juicy chicken, but he went a little overboard on the hot sauce. I made the collard green & carrot slaw, which was nothing to write home about. The biscuit was delicious when hot!
Beef Albondigas: This is the meal I wouldn’t have necessarily chosen, but it was seriously tasty! The meat balls seemed like more onion and raisin than meat, but they came out delicious! The squash went surprisingly well with them. The pan con tomate was the real winner though– essentially garlic bread made by physically rubbing a clove of garlic and half a tomato on its toasted goodness. Seriously, yum. I’d make it again in a heartbeat, although I do remember thinking it was an interesting waste of a tomato.
I loved last week, and though I’ve cancelled my membership, I’d consider doing Blue Apron again in the future. It tends to be too much pressure to cook at home three nights a week when there’s work, the gym, and other commitments pulling us away. That being said, I’m thinking of reactivating for a couple of winter meals.
Have you tried Blue Apron or a similar service? What did you think?
